Ever since Volition expanded the co-op functionality in Saints Row 2, the capability of a full co-op playthrough has become a mainstay in the open-world crime series. Despite taking a new narrative direction, the upcoming Saints Row is still going to include the fan-favorite feature along with character customization. But in this day and age, “just” online co-op isn’t enough; players expect crossplay functionality. So will the new Saints Row reboot have crossplay and even cross-gen co-op features?

Does Saints Row Have Crossplay?

It seems the Saints Row reboot won’t have crossplay co-op, and you cannot play the game together if you have a different console than your friend — but it will have cross-gen. Speaking with GamesRadar, a Deep Silver representative said that playing co-op between Xbox consoles is possible, but not between Xbox and PlayStation. They didn’t say anything about crossplay between consoles and PC.

The Game Informer interview detailed that the “drop-in/drop-out” online co-op will be (again) restricted to two players only, and both players will retain their custom character. Each player can explore the city of Santo Ileso at their own leisure but will be teleported if one triggers a mission.

All progression — story progress, collectibles, weapons, vehicles, what have you — is tracked “on a per-player basis,” meaning you can continue playing where you left off both in single and co-op mode. And if you got into a mission that’s much further from your own progress in co-op, the game “will remember” that you have played those missions, and you won’t have to replay it when you’re back in single-player.

It will also have a small, new addition to co-op interactivity: a pranking system. Volition hasn’t revealed all the juicy details, so let’s see what they have in store once the Saints Row reboot drops next week.

Saints Row is launching on August 23, 2022, for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC via Epic Games Store.
