A teaser trailer for Spiral: From the Book of Saw is finally here. Story details and how it will connect to the previous Saw movies are a bit light. But you can check out the trailer below:

The teaser plays it a bit safe with plot information. All we can tell is that it will follow Chris Rock’s Detective Zeke Banks as he tracks a cop killer. The title, Spiral, seems to come from the images left by the killer at each crime scene. Perhaps this is a brand new killer somehow following in the footsteps of Jigsaw. The most definitive link to the franchise comes in the final shot. Banks awakens, handcuffed to a bathroom pipe, with a saw in hand. Fans will remember this as the first major trap from the 2004 original.

News of the spin-off broke last May. And many fans may have been surprised to find they had comedian Chris Rock to thank for the franchise continuing. The script is based on his original idea and he also serves as an executive producer.

For those unaware, the Saw franchise focuses on a killer named Jigsaw. He seeks out those he deems guilty of wasting their lives rather than killing out of sick pleasure. He then places them in complicated traps and challenges them to escape so they’ll learn to be more grateful for what they have. The series is known for brutal violence, plot twists, and exceptionally clever trap designs. Spiral will be the franchise’s ninth entry after 2017’s Jigsaw.

Spiral also sees many alums from behind the scenes of Saw returning. Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, who wrote the last entry, adapted Rock’s story idea. Darren Lynn Bousman, who helmed entries 2 through 4, is returning to direct. James Wan (Aquaman, The Conjuring), director of the original, and Leigh Whannell (Insidious, The Invisible Man), co-writer and co-star of the original, are also executive producing.

Spiral co-stars Samuel L. Jackson and Max Minghella. It will release in theaters on May 15th, 2020.
