The canceled Xbox exclusive may have just found some new life with Nintendo.
It looks like Platinum’s canceled Xbox title might see the light of day after all. According to Nintendo Insider, the game has been brought back, only this time as an exclusive title for the Nintendo Switch. It remains unclear if the game is going to be started over from scratch or if development will continue on from where it left off. Still, the possibility of the game actually releasing at some point is better than what it has been for the past two years.
The dragon RPG project was headed by video game veteran Hideki Kamiya, and was looked at as the “killer app” for the Xbox One. However, as time went on the development dragged, and Microsoft was getting impatient. It all came to a head when the company decided to no longer fund the development, effectively shutting down the project. Miraculously, Microsoft renewed the Scalebound trademark in 2017, giving fans a renewed hope for a launch. Unfortunately, the company allowed the trademark to expire, as they didn’t know what to do with it since the game was canceled.
It’s no surprise that Nintendo is interested in the title, as they have had a great relationship with Platinum Games since they first started up. Their very first game, Madworld, was on the Nintendo Wii, which was soon followed up with a few games on the ill-fated Wii U, such as The Wonderful 101, and Bayonetta 1 and 2. They’ve already announced that Platinum Games is creating a Switch exclusive, Ashtral Chain, so it wouldn’t be such a stretch if they required yet another IP from the developer for their system. We’re still awaiting an official confirmation from Platinum and Nintendo, but for the time being, it looks like Scalebound has new place to call home.
