Scars Above, a new action-adventure RPG developed by Mad Head Games and published by Prime Matter, officially released its first gameplay trailer today at The Game Awards 2022 as one of a crowd of stunning new releases dropped at the awards ceremony.
A third-person RPG, Scars Above puts players in the shoes of astronaut and scientist Dr. Kate Ward, who is sent to study the Metahedron, a mysterious alien structure that appeared in Earth’s orbit one day and hasn’t left. But when Kate approaches the Metahedron, it flings her clear across the universe to a strange, extrasolar planet, stranding Kate alone and leaving her to find her crew and figure out where, exactly, they are.
Along the way, players will be able to explore the planet and scan its flora and fauna to learn more about this strange new planet and to collect materials, which can then be used in the game’s crafting system to make weapons, gear, or consumables to help Kate on her journey, according to a press release by Prime Matter.

The newest trailer for Scars Above, released at The Game Awards, begins with Kate waking up in a desolate, unknown landscape, creating a log as part of the Sentient Contact and Response Team. The new world is full of cryptic sigils and signs of an alien civilization, including puzzles and an oddly-futurist-looking black sphere, which seems to be a machine of some sort. Aside from chilling artifacts, the trailer also shows Kate facing down monstrous megafauna – “horrific alien lifeforms,” according to Prime Matter themselves – and exploring inside of something that looks disturbingly like a large organ of some kind.
Overall, the gameplay trailer for Scars released might remind audiences of some of the newer Tomb Raider games, with Dr. Kate Ward herself being somewhat reminiscent of Lara Croft, if Lara was a scientist instead of an archaeologist. But Scars Above has several gameplay features that make it stand out among a tightly-packed crowd of action-adventure RPGs, including an interesting-looking system of elemental-based weapons, like a shotgun that shoots ice patches at the ground.
Scars Above is currently scheduled to be released for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PC on February 28th, 2023. A free demo for the game is currently available to play on Steam.
