Just in time for Halloween, the Ghostface killer is up to its old tricks in the Scream 5 trailer. Unfortunately, Scream 5 will not be coming out until the new year. However, this new trailer full of scares is sure to tide audiences over until then. The fifth film in the franchise, this film continues the saga of Sidney Prescott. However, the Scream 5 trailer implies that this time it may not be entirely about her.
This time Ghostface is killing people related to previous killers in the franchise. When the new Ghostface sees Sidney, they say it is an honor to meet her. Audiences are wondering who the relations of the killers will be appearing. With Skeet Ulrich‘s recent resurgence as FP Jones on Riverdale, it would be a treat for Billy Loomis to make some appearance. A character’s death is not always the end in these films. Matthew Lillard took to Twitter to vocalize his support as well.
This is the first Scream film to come out after the death of director Wes Craven. In a recent interview, David Arquette admitted that there was something different about the filming of this one. Scream 5 seems to hold the old meta charm of the originals and bring something new to the table.
The Ghostface Legacy
The trailer opens with the iconic scene that was implemented by Drew Barrymore in the original film. A teenage girl is alone at home and terrorized by someone trying to call her. At first glance, it may seem odd that a teenager has a landline. But Scream 5 is using this as an homage and implementing new technologies to make Ghostface even more frightening. The teenager is also texting her friend on her cell phone. Her friend Amber turns out not to be Amber at all. The locks in the house are tied to her phone, which keeps unlocking. This is all a precursor for what is to come.
Old favorites return in Scream 5 with Sidney, Dewey, and of course, Gale. Dewey calls Sidney to let her know that Ghostface has returned. Instead of the usual shock and awe of the previous films, Dewey sounds resigned. It has been over twenty years since the first film, and all the original characters are exhausted from the terror of Ghostface. In a defeated voice, Dewey asks Sydney if she has a gun.
The new film looks like a promising update to an old story. Scream 5 will be released on January 14nd, 2022.
