A Saturday update from Deadline now confirms that Scream has dethroned Spiderman: No Way Home’s box office spot. The reboot of the classic horror film made $13.4 million on its opening day in 3,664 theaters, according to IMDB’s Box Office Mojo.
The fifth installment of the Scream series is also putting itself in a position to meet its $35 million pre-release projections. Many analysts are finding this a doable task, given the extended holiday weekend. This is also given that Scream is one of the most successful horror franchises of all time. Scream 5’s projections clearly show it’s been a successful reboot of the series.
Scream Retaking Its Horror Movie Title
Should these projections pan out, Scream would be a notable contender towards other hit horror sequels. Currently, the film is expected to have the same impact as Universal’s Halloween Kills and Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II. The opening is also an improvement for other Scream titles (specifically Scream 4). However, despite these numbers, the film still might not beat the franchise’s biggest debut (Scream 3).
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed the film. With these two, this is the first title without the late Wes Craven at the creative helm. Scream saw the return of stars Courtney Cox, Neve Campbell, and David Arquette as they take on the infamous Ghostface once again. The killing spree extends to a group of high school students, who also must survive. Here, the story takes place 25 years after the original and sees many old characters moving on with other lives.
Reception for the film was positive, with a 76% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has also received an 86% audience score and a B+ on CinemaScore. Many call the film perfect for older and newer moviegoers alike.
Despite denying the film five weeks at the top, Spiderman: No Way Home’s box office combined with Scream 5’s combined projections reach about $76 million. While this is not of the same caliber as pre-pandemic numbers, it’s a start.
