Sea of Thieves will release on the Xbox One later this year, but a closed beta will take place later this month.  Beginning on January 24th 12PM GMT the closed beta for Sea of Thieves will run until January 29th.  The five day beta is described by Rare as a “bespoke experience,”  something that’s been made to give players a taste of what the full game will be like.  Rare says that they will be holding a lot of the game back during the beta as to allow players to discover all there is to offer in Sea of Thieves once it releases in full.

Being that this is a closed beta there are only a couple of ways to get in.  The first is for those that have joined the Sea of Thieves insider program.  You must have joined before December 1, 2017 to be eligible for this closed beta.  Additionally, anyone who has pre-ordered the game will get access to this month’s closed beta.

For those that have pre-ordered the game through the Xbox or Windows Store, the game client will appear in your games library 24-hours before the beta begins.  All you need to do is download and install it.  If you happened to have pre-ordered a physical copy of the game you’ll need to redeem your code for the Black Dog cosmetic pack.  Doing so will grant you access to the game in your library 24-hours prior to the beta beginning.

The closed beta is not covered by any sort of NDA so expect plenty of Sea of Thieves footage later this month by content creators on YouTube, Twitch, and Mixer.

Sea of Thieves is the long-awaited exclusive coming from Rare for the Xbox One, barring any further delays the game is set to release on March 20th.
