Sea of Thieves was received warmly during its closed beta, despite some issues accessing the game at the start. But a new datamine shared on Reddit’s r/Seaofthieves reveals an open beta may be on the way.

Redditor vJoeyz looked over Sea of Thieves’ latest update, 1.73.9618.2, and checked out some of the new file changes added into the game. It seems Rare added in customization options for a “PirateGenerator” and added in a few Kraken updates, for one.

But the files also reference “open beta Order-of-Souls quests,” which suggest some form of open beta is coming sooner rather than later. Meanwhile, Order of Souls refers to one of the game’s three factions, Eurogamer reports, which means Rare may be adding faction-specific quests into the open beta so players can experience all three groups in conflict with one another.

For the most part, Sea of Thieves fans generally believed an open beta would be coming after the game’s closed beta was announced. But if an open beta is on the way, it will probably be coming sooner rather than later. Rare’s action-adventure multiplayer title is coming on March 20, meaning fans have just over a month to wait before the official game comes out. An open beta may split the wait up nicely.

Sea of Thieves lands on PC and Xbox One next month. For more information on the hottest upcoming titles, check out The OP’s most anticipated games for 2018.
