2020 is shaping up to be a big year for Sonic the Hedgehog. Sega announced Sonic 2020 yesterday, a project dedicated to honoring their mascot throughout the year before his 30th anniversary in 2021. The project will see them announce new information on the 20th of each month all year long.
While this announcement counts as one of the 12 pieces of news, Sega also released Twitter avatars and wallpapers for fans. They’ll also be accepting fan art sometime later to release as wallpapers and calendars. But February will be an important month for the project. We’ll get our first bit of actual news as well as the release of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie on February 14th.
There’s no telling what kind of announcements are coming our way. Some of it is sure to pertain to a game release. The last title Sonic appeared in was Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Before that, it was Team Sonic Racing. So, it seems like he’s due for a more classic adventure. He’s also starred in numerous comics as well as his fair share of animated TV shows over the years. So it wouldn’t be surprising if some announcements focused on other materials.
The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is under heavy scrutiny, more so than many other video game adaptations. Immense backlash at the first trailer caused the film to be delayed by three months. Director Jeff Fowler announced the delay was due to changing Sonic’s design to appease passionate fans. Reactions to a second trailer were much more positive. And hopefully, the movie will be a great way to start Sonic’s year-long celebration.
