Following Funimation’s announcement on Monday, they confirmed that the Selection Project “Idol x Audition x Reality Show” will be theirs to stream. The show is starting first in Japan (in October) and then will premiere in the west. Kadokawa originally teased the multimedia project back in December. Only now has Selection Project had a real confirmation and release timeline.

Daisuke Hiramaki (Naruto Shippuden) is directing the anime at studio Doga Kobo (Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun). Yuya Takahashi (Dragon Ball Super: Broly) is supervising and writing the script. Kanna Hirayama (Rent a Girlfriend) is designing the characters, and Yohei Kisara (Another) is producing the music. Finally, Dandelion Animation Studio (Haikyu!!) is doing the CG animation for all of the episodes.

The Story Behind Selection Project

This project is about the seventh annual “Selection Project”, which is a national idol reality show. The show is the gateway for young girls that want to become idols. In particular, the show follows nine girls who have each won the regional qualifying rounds. The audience’s votes determine which girl wins or loses the “audition battle”.

The main story for Funimation’s Selection Project “Idol x Audition x Reality Show” follows Suzune Miyama, who wishes to be an idol like Akari Amazawa. Suzune has had an illness that prevents her from participating in the show, but she has always listened to Akari’s music to make herself feel better. After spending time in the hospital, Akari’s voice gave Suzune the courage to pursue her dream as an idol as well. From there, she decides to enter the seventh “Selection Project” and make her dreams c0me true.

Along with this manga series, the author (Koji Azuma) released another manga. This story follows the one Akari, who became the first winner of the Selection Project show. As of now, the four-panel manga is still being published and can be found on the official website and Twitter.
