As part of Nintendo’s tradition, a new DLC fighter for Super Smash Brothers Ultimate has finally been revealed. With most of Nintendo’s announcements this year being very sporadic and spread out thin, the steady stream of Smash Brothers content delivers on the character mashup. Despite being in the midst of a controversy regarding Nintendo’s stance on a netplay Melee mod, they still are showcasing new content and support for Ultimate. Following the excitement after the inclusion of Steve from Minecraft as Fighter number 7, Nintendo decided to partner with Square Enix for their next upcoming character for Smash Bros. Unveiled at the opening of The Game Awards, Fighter number 8 is officially Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7.

The one-winged angel, Sephiroth from the @FINALFANTASY series, joins #SmashBrosUltimate as a DLC fighter later this month! Tune in at 2pm PT on 12/17 for a presentation from director Masahiro Sakurai all about the DLC fighter, including the release date! pic.twitter.com/zRaZCSZkrn

Opening during the fight against Galeem in the world of light, the trailer shows fighters of Super Smash Bros witness Sephiroth strike him down in one fell blow. Using his impressive range thanks to his sword, Masamune, he easily outranges most characters. Not to mention his impressive spells and powers, Sephiroth is a perfect choice to enter Smash Bros Ultimate’s epic array of fighters. Sephiroth has a well rounded and unique playset thanks to some of the teased gameplay showing off his decent recovery options and gameplay gimmick. Surrounding his winged aesthetic is a powerboost much like Cloud’s limit break that will help to enhance his special moves. Releasing later this month, the one-winged angel descends on the Smash Bros roster joining Cloud Strife. Originally theorized to be in Super Smash Brothers for WiiU and 3DS, fans have been wishing for Nintendo to include Sephiroth ever since Cloud was revealed as a DLC in 2015. Now it seems that he has been unleashed onto the world of Smash on Nintendo Switch.
