At long last, the series’ original antagonist is poised to take the stage.

UPDATE (9/12)

It’s official. Check out the new trailer at the end of the article.

Bandai Namco also released another trailer providing an overview of the game’s various modes. Check it out below:

ORIGINAL STORY

We already figured he was in SoulCalibur 6 due to a past trailer and recent screenshots, but a trailer has confirmed what we assumed for awhile now: Cervantes is indeed coming to SC6.

It was rather odd that it took so long for Cervantes to be officially revealed considering his importance to the Soul franchise, even if, again, we already had some idea that he was coming. For those unaware, Cervantes has been around from the very beginning — a feat only matched by three other characters: Mitsurugi, Siegfried and Nightmare.

Specifically, Cervantes was the series original antagonist, serving as the big bad in Soul Edge due to him losing his mind and slaughtering his former crew after coming into possession of the Soul Edge. He was eventually defeated by the combined efforts of Sophitia, Taki and Siegfried, but was unknowingly resurrected by Nightmare in the original SoulCalibur and has been on a mad hunt for the sword ever since, disregarding the safety of all who come across him, including his own daughter, Ivy.

Judging from the trailer, Cervantes will be doing much of what he has always done throughout the series: slicing victims from up close and shooting them from afar with his patented longsword and “pistol sword.” And to add insult to injury, his Critical Egde sees him unleash a savage combination of the two, starting off with a brutal slash to the opponent before shooting them several times, launching him/her up into the air and finishing the onslaught with a spinning slash that sends both of them back to the ground.

With SoulCalibur 6 just over a month away, it appears we’re nearing the end of characters we can expect to find on the base roster. All who remain are Raphael (who was also leaked along with Cervantes in some screenshots), and unconfirmed characters from the original SC storyline, such as Rock, Lizardman and Hwang. There’s also the possibility that some of them, like Tira, will show up as DLC.

SoulCalibur 6 is due out for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on Oct. 19.
