Universal and Nintendo appear to be building a Nintendo cinematic universe as a second animated Nintendo movie is reportedly in development. According to Giant Freakin Robot, a Donkey Kong solo animated movie featuring Seth Rogen in the leading role is in development at Illumination Entertainment,  the studio that brought the world films like Despicable Me and The Secret Life of Pets.

Illumination is also producing the animated Super Mario Bros, which will feature Rogen as Donkey Kong alongside Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, and Keegan Michael-Key as Toad. The studio has not shared much more information on the Donkey Kong solo movie as it’s early in development. Fred Armisen, who is voicing Cranky Kong in the Mario movie, could make an appearance, but that is unconfirmed.

Fans who have played the Donkey Kong Country games are familiar with the extensive roster of Donkey Kong characters. These characters include Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, Cranky Kong, Funky Kong, Candy Kong, and Tiny Kong. All of these characters could be in this movie along with Donkey Kong’s archenemy King K. Rool. King K. Rool gained tons of popularity recently with his addition to Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

Universal and Nintendo are also expanding their theme parkland at Universal Studios Japan with a Donkey Kong expansion. This new section will include a brand new rollercoaster and many unique interactive experiences. Super Nintendo World already includes rides like Yoshi Adventure and Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge. Super Nintendo World is also coming to Universal Studios Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood, but the Donkey Kong section hasn’t been confirmed.

The Donkey Kong movie is very early in development, so information such as casting news and a release date is still unknown. However, Rogen as Donkey Kong will make his debut when the Super Mario Bros film debuts in December 2022.
