Oh Lara, always getting herself into mischief. Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be her third adventure since the series was rebooted. The trailer released today, and so far it appears to be a case of classic hi-jinx from Ms. Croft. Climbing up cliffs and then falling down other cliffs feature heavily, as do weird cults, stabbings, and potential hints at some strange and eldritch power. I love a bit of eldritch power in games, if I am honest.

The reboot originally turned Lara Croft into a grittier, more realistic character. The things Lara has had to do have taken a toll on her, and the trailer hints that this theme will be continued. As the old saying goes, bravery is not the absence of fear, but rather is the willingness to act in the face of it. The new Lara would certainly fall into that category. This game also seeks to up the stakes, with the whole world falling under the threat of a Mayan prophecy about the end of the world.

The game is being developed by Eidos Montréal, who have taken over from Crystal Dynamics for this entry in the series. Everything looks very much like the new Tomb Raider games we have gotten so used to though, and gamers are sure to recognize the familiarity of both the art direction, and the tone.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider will release for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, on September 14.
