The latest season of the long-running competition series Dancing With The Stars recently premiered its first episode. The cast comprises some notable celebrities willing to try their hands at ballroom dancing, but much attention has gone to famed drag queen, Shangela. On the premiere episode of the season, Shangela and her partner Gleb Savcenko danced to When I Grow Up by the Pussycat Dolls. The pair received a standing ovation from the audience and high judges’ scores. In fact, they tied for the second-highest scores of the night.

Shangela, whose real name is D.J Pierce, made history with the premiere of the new season of Dancing With The Stars for two reasons. It’s the first time the show has featured a drag queen as a contestant. Also, although Shangela appears in full drag for the show, the pairing with Gleb is the first all-male team on Dancing With The Stars.

Dancing With The Stars airs Monday nights on Disney+. Viewers should know that instead of premiering early in the morning as most shows on the platform do, DWTS airs in primetime as it did on ABC.

Dancing With The Stars did premiere back in 2005 on ABC. However, the show switched platforms and is now on Disney+. As usual, the season has several notable celebrities from various fields. Besides Shangela, there’s Teresa Giudice from The Real Housewives Of New Jersey, Vinny from Jersey Shore, Selma Blair, Wayne Brady, Jordan Sparks, and many others. Each week the dancing couple with the lowest scores will be sent home, which means one celebrity has already departed the competition.

Tyra Banks hosts this season. The judges are Len Goodman, Derek Hough, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli. The move from ABC to Disney+ for such a staple show was a controversial decision, so we’ll see how Dancing With The Stars connects to its audience on its new streaming platform.
