It feels like we get someone on the Deadpool 3 team telling us how it will keep the violence from the previous films, and it will be R-rated, and Shawn Levy is the latest to say this. In an interview with Collider, the director talked about keeping the third film “gritty” and “raw” as it goes from the Fox X-Men franchise to the MCU.

Filming is being planned by Shawn Levy and the team for Deadpool 3 to around spring 2023, approximately around May. The filmmaker cited the heavy visual effects in Marvel movies as a requirement for the film needs time in the oven. Although it will lean into CGI as the previous films have, it is his and Ryan Reynolds’ “priority” to make the third installment “raw, gritty, [and] grounded.” He also said it will be “hardcore” and “in your face.”

Deadpool 3 promised by Shawn Levy to maintain R-rated violence

The writing process has been underway for Deadpool 3, with Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds being hands-on with the project. It is being written by the scribes of the first two films, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Initially, they were replaced by Bob’s Burgers writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin. They were quietly taken off, with the original writers signing back on once the Stranger Things producer was set to sit in the director’s chair.

The director has called the writing process a “blast” as he and the others “laugh every day.” When it comes to making a movie about the Merc with a Mouth, he called it “one of the most fun creative experiences” in his career. For a guy who has worked on Stranger Things and various projects with the leading actor, like Free Guy, it is saying a lot.

Not much is known about the film. Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine to join the hilarious red-suited anti-hero. It will be a major shift for Marvel Studios as the first R-rated project, giving fans all of the gore and foulness the character is known for while being tied to the greater picture that Kevin Feige and the team continue to craft.

Deadpool 3 will release on November 8, 2024.
