Shazam! 2 is set to release on April 1st, 2022 according to Warner Bros. updated release schedule.
Shazam! which released in April this year brought much-needed life to the DC Extended Universe. DC’s films have been criticized for being too serious and dark but the coming-of-age superhero comedy broke away from the mold. The film followed fourteen-year-old foster kid Billy Bateson (Asher Angel) who was granted the power to turn into an adult superhero – Shazam (Zachary Levi).
With the blisteringly good Wonder Woman 84 trailer and the anticipation for James Gunn’s Suicide Squad sequel, the DCEU appears to be getting back on track. Shazam! received positive reviews, with a score of 90% from Rotten Tomatoes and 4/5 stars from The Nerd Stash. Shazam! also did fairly well at the box-office. It made $364 million worldwide, which places it behind every major Marvel and DC film since 2012 but had a modest budget of $80 million.
Zachary Levi is set to return for the sequel, which comes as no surprise. The actor tweeted his countdown to the film’s release.

The Future of the DCEU
Black Adam, the spin-off to Shazam! is set to release in December 2021. Dwayne Johnson will be playing the titular anti-hero and nemesis to Shazam so it’s likely that the two will be facing off in Shazam!’s sequel. Dwayne Johnson is one of the biggest names in Hollywood, so his star-power can only be positive for the DCEU.
It’s going to be an exciting few years for DC fans. With Margot Robbie returning, Harley Quinn’s solo outing, Birds of Prey releases next year along with Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 84.
Shazam!’s sequel news also comes along with release date for The Flash which is set to release in July 2022. The Matrix sequel has also been listed to return in May 2021.
