As the Marvel Cinematic Universe grows, comic book fans are thrilled with how many new comic book characters are being pulled from the shelves and introduced to the screen. One of the latest superheroes to find themselves in the spotlight is none other than the fascinating She-Hulk, the counterpart of the Hulk from Marvel.

As of April 12th, 2021, She-Hulk has officially begun filming at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. Though we have no official release date yet, we know the series will be premiering on Disney Plus sometime in 2022, and we want to get you a little more prepared.

As far as the show goes, here is what we know so far:

The character of Jennifer Walters, aka She-Hulk, will be played by the Orphan Black star Tatian Maslany. Alongside Maslany, we will also see Mark Ruffalo returning as the Hulk. Other celebrities include Tim Roth, Ginger Gonzaga, and Renee Elise Goldsberry.

With little else known about the project details, we don’t know how close Marvel and Disney will be keeping to the comic’s original story.

As She-Hulk isn’t as well-known as her larger male counterpart, the Hulk, I thought it might be smart to explain more about who she is and tell some of her most exciting adventures.

So, let’s brush up on what we know about the comic book character to get us more prepared for what’s coming in Disney Plus’s upcoming series.

She-Hulk: Who Is She and What Can She Do?

Created by Stan Lee and artist John Buscema, She-Hulk first appeared in Marvel Comics back in 1980.

As the origin story goes, in order to save her life from a shot wound, Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk, ends up providing his cousin, Jennifer Walters, with some of his blood. As she lies in the hospital bed recovering, the mobsters that had first tried to kill her come back to try and finish the job, but this time she can stop them.

Although Banner’s gamma-infused blood had worked in saving her life, when combined with her own anger and the adrenaline rushing through her system, she transforms into a larger, green-colored version of herself with powers very similar to her cousin.

Though she is not as large as the Hulk, she possesses superhuman strength, speed, and durability, as well as the ability to regenerate. Unlike the Hulk, Walters can retain her intelligence after her transformations and is more able to remain in control of herself. Although, she does change for the same reason – anger. However, because of her ability to keep her wits about her, she soon develops almost total control of her powers. With that, she usually keeps herself partially hulked out most of the time. Kind of like the Hulk does in Avengers: Endgame when we see Banner’s ability to merge more peacefully with his brawny alter-ego.

Beyond the Origin Story

Jennifer Walters is a highly skilled defense lawyer before she becomes She-Hulk, and she retains that position afterwards, too. She even becomes the go-to attorney for the other heroes and helpfully defends them in the courtroom on several occasions. Some of her most famous cases include Captain America, Spider-Man, Howard the Duck, and Morbius, the Living Vampire.

Fun Fact: The law firm that She-Hulk worked for was named after the Marvel creator’s legends, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Martin Goodman. The firm was called Goodman, Lieber, Kurtxberg, and Holliway. (Stan Lee was originally Stan Lieber and Jack Kirby was originally Jacob Kurtzberg)

Beyond her skills as a lawyer, as you follow along with her comic book history, anyone can see that She-Hulk is a valuable part of the Marvel Universe. She becomes a member of the Avengers and, because of her great personality, quickly bonds with the members as she fights alongside them. She also becomes a member of the Fantastic Four when she replaces the Thing.

She-Hulk: She is More Than Just the Female Version of the Hulk

As a lawyer and superhero, Jennifer Walters is a one-of-a-kind superhero that stands alone as her very own character quite separate from her cousin, Bruce Banner. She takes her life into her own hands and has close friendships with Avenger characters like the Wasp and Hawkeye. She also has an interesting love life that includes superheroes like Starfox, Luke Cage, Iron Man, Juggernaut, and humans without powers. She even had a quick fling with Hercules.

She-Hulk truly embraced her abilities and powers and was known to be quite happy in her She-Hulk body. In the “Sensational She-Hulk” graphic novel, she loses the ability to return to her human form at all after being exposed to radiation. Rather than be disappointed, she shrugs it off with confidence and pride. She’s content with who she is.

That confident attitude is something that She-Hulk truly embodies throughout most of her history. Walters knows that she is smart, and she knows that she’s attractive. She embraces her voluptuousness by posing for her own covers. Like, Deadpool, She-Hulk is aware of the fact that she is a comic book character and talks to her audience. Known as ‘breaking the fourth wall,’ She-Hulk even confronts the creator of her series “Sensational She-Hulk” by ripping through a page to yell at him.

Who’s Ready For She-Hulk!?

Far more unique than one might expect, She-Hulk is more than just a sexier carbon copy of the Hulk. Not only did Walters help save the world multiple times as a part of the Marvel Universe‘s two most supreme teams, but she was also a character that kept an important ‘human job’ as a lawyer. It’s exciting to see that we are getting another strong, smart, and sexy female superhero on the line-up.

Who knows where in the She-Hulk’s comic book history, the Disney Plus series will take place, but I am sure we will see it begin somewhat similarly to the comics. Also, with Tim Roth returning as Abomination, we know at least one of the villains she will be fighting. With filming finally started, I am sure more information and sneak-peeks will be coming soon!
