Sega revealed that Shenmue™ I and II will be released once again for current generation consoles at Sega Fes in Japan earlier today.
Both games follow Yu Suzuki, who’s searching for his father’s murderer across Japan and China. Shenmue is an open-world adventure game that was developed and published for the Sega Dreamcast.
This series is revered as one of the greatest of all time, with millions of fans around the world. Both games will be sold in the same collection when they’re released sometime this year, which means fans won’t need to buy each one separately.
The announcement coincides with the future release of Shenmue III, which was revealed at Sony’s 2015 E3 press conference. The game was originally funded on Kickstarter and is expected to come to PS4 sometime in the future.
Fans had almost given up hope of a third installment until that fateful day. Shenmue II was originally released in September 2001, which means it’s been nearly two decades since the latest entry in the series was launched.
Sega claims that both games are the definitive versions of the classic Sega Dreamcast titles and come with additional options for players to take advantage of. These options include fully scalable screen resolution, choice of modern or classic control schemes, PC graphics options, an updated user interface, and the option to play the game with Japanese or English voice overs.
The games will launch both physically and digitally for PS4, Xbox One, and PC sometime this year. Sega has not yet provided an official release date, however, and fans are still unsure if they’ll get to play the titles on the Nintendo Switch in the future.
