Atlus has officially announced that the next entry in the long-running Shin Megami Tensei franchise, Shin Megami Tensei V, will be coming to the Nintendo Switch.

There isn’t much information to go on so far, as all we know is what Atlus revealed via a brief 1:22 trailer. However, through that trailer we know that Shin Megami Tensei 5 will be set in modern day Tokyo and there appears to be two characters who could be central to the story, a male and female student. The trailer begins with the two walking inside of a train station, before cutting to a scene where we see the city’s tunnels being littered with demon corpses. Afterwards, the students find themselves surrounded by demons in a wasteland before being seemingly devoured by them. The trailer then cuts to black and the mysterious words, “Shekinah Glory” and “Daath” appear on the screen.

Atlus first hinted at Shin Megami Tensei 5 during Nintendo’s Switch reveal event in January, but with this teaser in place, fans can safely look forward to another demon-filled journey through the streets of Tokyo sometime in the future. For the time being, it appears that Shin Megami Tensei 5 will only be for the Switch and will forgo the Nintendo 3DS unlike many of its predecessors before it. Though it’s a possibility that Atlus has shifted its focus to the Switch as far as its Nintendo releases are concerned, there is still a market for the 3DS, so there’s still a slight chance it will appear on that platform as well.

The Shin Megami Tensei series is considerably different than its spin-off, the Persona series, featuring darker plots, multiple story routes, and its demon negotiation and turn press mechanics. Fortunately, if you played Persona 5 then you may some idea of what the series is about since it borrowed several elements from the SMT, such as Psy and Nuke spells, as well as demon negotiation. Of course, if you want an even better idea of what the series is about then you should check out Shin Megami Tensei IV or Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse for the 3DS.

A release date has yet to be announced.
