The organic world of Scorn is unforgiving. Not only is the environment filled with gruesome scenes of body horror and structures covered in disgusting material, but Scorn also features complicated puzzles that induce a different type of horror. During the first Act I puzzle, you must make a choice that some may miss. Do you choose the scoop or the saw in the first puzzle of Scorn?
The first puzzle requires you to enter a large chamber and retrieve an egg to get past a locked door. After retrieving the egg from the second floor, you will have to push the egg in a cart through the chamber. The chamber contains a track leading to two rooms: One with a scoop contraption and one with a saw contraption. Deciding where to take the egg has unforeseen consequences, so is there a right choice?
What happens if I pick the Scoop in Scorn?
The scoop seems like the more humane choice, but if you study the environment, you will get a hint as to what takes place if you choose the scoop. Limbs and egg shells sit around the base of the scoop, and choosing the scoop will add to the pile. If you choose the scoop, the creature in the egg will be scooped from it, dismembering it and killing it. Once the creature is disposed of, you can pick up its arm, carry it to the modification station in the hallway leading to the main chamber, then use it to open the chamber door.
What happens if I pick the Saw in Scorn?
The saw is the more difficult option and seems like the more violent choice to extract the egg. However, it turns out to be the merciful choice, as the saw will cut into the egg, leaving enough room for the creature to escape the egg. Once the creature is out of the egg, learning to walk and follow you will take some time. Once the creature follows you, take it to the modification station and lead it to the controls for the chamber door.
Difference between choosing Scoop or Saw in Scorn
The choice does not have an impact on the ending of the game, however, each choice does have a separate achievement, so if you want both, you will have to complete the puzzle twice. Choosing the Scoop is definitely the more gruesome, but you will complete the puzzle faster. The choice also does not affect gameplay moving forward, but you do have to keep your little friend’s fate on your conscious.
How to get to the Scoop or Saw in Scorn
To get to the rooms, you will have to operate the large machine on the top of the structure in the middle of the chamber. Using the machine, you can change track positions in the chamber. Here is what each track should be set to to get to that room.
- Saw: Close the Bottom Left track, close the Bottom Right, and keep the Top Left open.Scoop: Close the Bottom Left Track and keep Bottom Right open
