Horror manga artist Junji Ito was at the Toronto Comics Art Festival a few days ago and shared some interesting details about his cooperation with Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro on Silent Hills.

As you might remember, the game was cancelled back in 2015 due to the huge controversy between Kojima and Konami, that ultimately forced the game designer to leave the company and join Sony for the new IP Death Stranding.

Ito revealed that he was contacted by the two around the time of the release of the first Pacific Rim, and he was even gifted tickets for it.

He said del Toro is a big gamer while he is not, that Kojima didn’t worry about his lack of experience on games (they’ve known each other for twenty years) and that del Toro wanted to keep the entire title in a single environment and continuously scare the players in it.

Most importantly, Ito revealed that after a meeting on the game, he never “heard anything about that. I heard the plan got scrapped from outside sources.” Sadly, he added that “never started designing monsters” and that “nothing exists. There are no roughs or sketches,” which seems to hint at the game being in a very early stage when Konami pulled the plug.

It’s very sad to hear such things as the PT demo was one of the most promising horror showcases of the entire generations and probably won’t ever have something on par.

Silent Hills was set to be releasing on PS4 and to have Norman Reedus as the protagonist. He is now working on Death Stranding together with Kojima.

“Once the Silent Hills meeting was over, we went to karaoke. I didn’t hear anything after that. I heard that the plan got scrapped through outside sources. I have seen Kojima and Del Toro since. I never started designing monsters. Nothing exists. There are no roughs or sketches.”
