A while back we heard of an update coming to the Kinect motion camera that was rumored to increase the resolution of the motion camera.  The rumor was shot down by Microsoft PR in front of the Christmas holiday.  A couple of new sources on the web have pointed to a silent update that has increased the resolution of the camera and has recently been confirmed by Microsoft?

But as the story goes, the rumored update that would resolve the limitations of the usb-connection with the Kinect has been pushed through by Microsoft before Christmas.  Apparently the “Silent Update” happened in the background.  The source lists Chris Newton, a representative for Microsoft validating this information.  What effectively happened in the update?  Well a dynamic resolution feature was added to the camera.  This meaning one camera lowers its resolution while another camera gains a higher resolution, ultimately netting a greater resolution increasing the camera to 640 x 480.

It’s rumored that this would now allow the camera to recognize gestures in the hands and wrists.  The update is said to allow developers be more precise in their control schemes in upcoming titles.
