Sin City is heading to the small screen, according to Deadline. News broke earlier today that Legendary Television (Lost in Space, The Expanse) signed a deal with the comic’s creator, Frank Miller. The terms of the deal are that Legendary will guarantee a single season. That is, as long as they can set it up with a network or streaming platform. The deal will also see the production of a “hard R” animated prequel series based on the original graphic novels.
Sin City is a series of neo-noir comics that take place in the bleak, crime-ridden city. Each volume focuses on different interconnected stories. But it’s Miller’s fascinating artwork that’s the standout. It’s mostly black and white to pay homage to classic noir films, though they do feature bursts of color. The series received two live-action film adaptations: 2005’s Sin City and 2014’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Each adapted the contrast of color with black and white from Miller’s artwork well. Certain violent scenes brought out deep red while a femme fatale’s blonde hair shone brightly to accentuate a male character’s infatuation with her.
Both films were co-directed by Miller and Robert Rodriguez (Alita: Battle Angel). Deadline also reports that Rodriguez is in talks to take part in the TV series, though the deal is still underway. Miller and Rodriguez will likely be executive producers. Others attached to produce are Stephen L’Heureux, a producer of the 2014 film, and Silenn Thomas, the head of Miller’s production company.
The news is fresh, so there isn’t any word on casting, directors, or even writers as of yet. If Miller and Rodriguez were to return behind the camera, they would undoubtedly capture the same visual flair that made their films so engaging and eye-popping. But for now, we’ll just have to wait and see.
