EA has recently been trying to save its image more and more. With big promises for things to be different and move much smoother, fans are hopeful. Yet, with all good news, there are concessions. New and old fans may be excited for Skate 4, eponymously titled Skate. With news surrounding the game all hinging on the current playtest available, many have raised questions and concerns. Time and time again, there are leaks to projects that need external testing. Skate is no stranger to this, and the build of the playtest sent to users was available online within days. EA issued a statement telling users not to download the playtest as doing so infringes on terms of service. Now, it seems that others have taken to data mining whatever is present in the playtest. Users at the EA Skate 4 subreddit shared a datamined image of a microtransaction loot box system set with in-store purchases.

A dataminer has found loot boxes in Skate. called “Swag Bags” that uses a currency called “Taps” where players can unlock different customization options.

What Does EA’s Skate Loot Box And Microtransaction Do?

While the image itself doesn’t reveal too much, it does indicate a false promise. As games journalist Tom Henderson points out in his subtweet, no loot boxes were a big promise for the title. While the image indicates that the currency “Taps” can be earned in the game, the rate at which it is accumulated is unknown. Furthermore, the image itself lists the loot boxes as “swag bags” for 100 currency. Users believe that this can all just be purchased through microtransactions indicated in another line describing the system. So while it may turn out true that all cosmetics can be available through in-game play, Skate is doing plenty of testing. It’s unclear how this will affect the overall perception of the title, but as more news is sure to reveal soon. Hopefully, fans can look forward to enjoying Skate without microtransaction worries.
