Those looking for a new video game skateboarding experience are in luck, as it was announced today that Skater XL will be coming to all major platforms this July.
Skater XL looks to launch the skateboarding video game genre higher than ever before by featuring real-world locations and professional skaters, as well as intensive board control. Unlike the popular Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series, Skater XL is more similar to 2007’s Skate, in that players pull off tricks using one of the joysticks instead of pressing a button.

Alongside the announcement of a release window, indie developer Easy Day Studios announced downtown Los Angeles as one of the maps for Skater XL. This will include the Staples Center and the LA Convention Center. Those of you missing NBA games or wanting to pretend E3 wasn’t canceled may want to hit up those locations in-game.
“Downtown LA is iconic to skating and we wanted to showcase it first as we gear up for launch,” said Director and Co-Founder of Easy Day Studios, Dain Hedgpeth. “We spent considerable time capturing critical details to recreate its many legendary spots and look forward to players getting their hands on it in July.”
The announcement also came with a gameplay trailer, so you can check out downtown LA and plan your tricks ahead of time. The trailer features professional skaters Tom Asta, Brandon Westgate, Tiago Lemos, and Evan Smith as playable characters.
If you just can’t wait to get back to skating in a video game, Skater XL is currently in Early Access on Steam. If you’re on console, unfortunately, you’ll have to wait for the full release. Despite being on PC, no mouse and keyboard support will be coming to the game.
Skater XL will be coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC this July.
