You may have played a few rogue-lites in your time, or maybe even some rogue-lite modes in other games. But have you ever played a reverse roguelike? I can guarantee you haven’t played one like this before. The team at 10tons has announced their reverse roguelike today, known as Skeletal Avenger. The game is coming to PC and consoles in late 2020 and has iOS and Android versions coming sometime later. Skeletal Avenger already has a Steam page where you can wishlist the game. There’s also a new trailer, which you can check out below.

Skeletal Avenger takes a different approach to the way rogue-lites are done. Rather than descending into a massive dungeon, you’re instead battling your way to the surface for a way out. Each skeleton you spawn has a different target they hold a grudge against, and they’re waiting at the top of the dungeon. It’s up to you to survive as one of these skeletons and make your way to the top. You’ll get special rewards if you manage to take out your target but if you die, there’s never an end to targets to deal with.

Besides the idea of a reverse rogue-lite, Skeletal Avenger has a few more unique tricks up its sleeve (or in this case, up its bone). These come in the way of self-decapitating special moves. You can take off your head and throw it at enemies as a form of ranged attack. These attacks will change based on what headgear you’re wearing. You could have your head send out damaging slime, or even explode. The possibilities will be endless, and many runs will have a lot of variation.

Skeletal Avenger promises to be an interesting rogue-lite, unlike ones you’ve played before it. If you want more details, you can find that on the game’s official website.
