During the recent Nintendo Direct, a slew of announcements was released by Nintendo such as Terry Bogard joining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition. However, one of the biggest announcements was that the long-rumored SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) Nintendo Switch Online was coming.

SNES Online has officially been released, giving Nintendo Switch Online users access to 20 of the Super Nintendo’s greatest hits. These include timeless classics like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Mario World. The online service also includes so more hidden gems, with games like Brawl Brothers and Joe And Mac 2: Lost In The Tropics.

In order to download SNES Online, you’ll a Nintendo Online subscription. First, you will need to go to the Nintendo eShop. Next, scroll down to Nintendo Switch Online. Then the option to download it will be there.

The Online service will have all the same features as the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) Nintendo Switch Online. Features including saved game states and a rewind function will be included in SNES Online. One of the biggest features returning from NES Online is two-player online functionality. The SNES was well known for some great multiplayer experiences. The SNES also had a Super Multitap adapter allowing up to four players to play a game. Therefore, it could be possible to play with up to four-player in SNES online.

Nintendo will also be designing the SNES controllers for the Nintendo Switch. The SNES controller is one of the most influential controller designs of all time. The Switch version of the SNES controllers will be wireless and use USB0-C charging.

However, the more exciting news about SNES online coming to the Nintendo Switch is what it might mean for the future of the online service. Will Nintendo release other classic console libraries for the Switch? Will there be a Nintendo 64 online? Or a Gameboy Advance online? Even if those aren’t released, the SNES has one of the greatest libraries of games. There are still classic games waiting to be released on SNES Online.
