Rebellion Developments is returning with their award-winning series Sniper Elite 5, released on May 25th. Finally, players can head back into one of the original sniping franchises. Now available on most devices, choose your approach making your way through 1944 France. With the release of the Rebellion Developments game, we decided to check it out. Find out how it is with our review of Sniper Elite 5.

Story: A lengthy campaign to stop a secret plot

Set during the latter half of World War 2, players fall into the shoes of Karl Fairburne. Attached to a US Ranger unit, tasked with tweaking the fortifications along the Atlantikwall. Making contact with French resistance fighters together, they will uncover a secret operation to end the war before the Allies can invade named Operation Kraken.

Sniper Elite 5’s campaign is a lengthy affair that will offer freedom to choose how you will address each mission and the added tasks. Rebellion Developments sought to provide a campaign full of choices that will change how you play the game each time. While this, in many cases, is a good thing, those who aren’t ready to put a bit of time aside to complete each mission may find the campaign a bit lengthy.

Gameplay: Freedom to snipe how and where you want

Sniper Elite 2 will offer players an open world to choose their approaches and plan their attacks. Using various weapons, grenades, and plantable explosives creates the best situation to pull off the perfect shot. Sniper Elite 5 offers not only a lengthy single-player campaign but also various other game modes for the player to enjoy.

The campaign mode has players step into the shoes of Karl Fairburne and play across nine main story missions and one DLC mission with upcoming additional missions solo or cooperatively. Each assignment will place Karl in various locations on the map allowing the player to choose how they will complete each task in the mission. Additional tasks are offered for the player to receive extra rewards for completing them. With greater difficulty comes more reward. Completing sides take and assassination requests earn higher rewards. For players looking for an even more significant challenge, Rebellion Developments is offering a new single-player addition.

Introducing invasion mode, take up the rifle of the German jager sniper and hunt down Karl to stop him from completing his mission. This new dimension of combat will kick off a game of cat and mouse between snipers, allowing Karl to call in addition assistance in the form of a second sniper. Elevate your single-player experience with a duel of sniping skills, but if that’s not your speed Sniper Elite 5 offers various other game modes.

Team up or face your friends with multiplayer

If you’re looking for something more cooperative, survival will drop you and three other friends to set up and survive against waves of enemies. Together you’ll prepare your defenses to last out against various waves of enemies and defend your central point. Together you’ll protect the central shifting point from the oncoming Nazi army that will attempt to overrun your team.

If survival doesn’t scratch that itch, you’ll still find many of the classic multiplayer game modes in any other shooter. There are free-for-all, team matches, squad matches, and custom game modes, and Rebellion also includes a special game mode for Sniper Elite. This mode is called no cross, which is entirely built for snipers. You’ll have to shoot it out from a distance. As the name of the mode states, players won’t be able to cross over an area to close in on their enemies.

Sniper Elite 5 players are given vast amounts of freedom of movement. This is added with a variety of traversal tools and actions. These systems operate cleanly for much of Sniper Elite 5 with few issues, but unfortunately, this is not always the case. For example, while reviewing Sniper Elite 5, movement and traversal would frequently fall apart when entering buildings. Having to fight doorways to enter them or vaulting through windows or over fences can lack a smoothness.

Additionally, with issues in the controls, we had encountered one rather serious bug on the PC. As a result, Sniper Elite 5 would experience unexpected crashes on several occasions at launch. This issue will more than likely be addressed later with some patches.

Graphics/Audio: A beautiful and detailed world of conflict

Rebellion Developments has recreated various real-world locations in Sniper Elite 5 using photogrammetry, the art, and science of using photographs to create 3D information. Designing an environment with moving opposition as units shift positions and multiple infiltration and extraction points offers players many options to play. In addition, Rebellion Developments built a wide-open and beautiful map in their game for players to sneak around or fight it out on.

Sniper Elite 5 returns with a fan favorite with the X-ray kill cam allowing players to see the destructive power once again as they get the perfect shot and take out their enemy. Getting the perfect shots with pistols and SMGs will also reward players with the trademark kill cam.

The audio in Sniper Elite 5 is fantastic, which is necessary. Listening for footsteps, talking, and shots that ring out will help you locate your targets. Offering rich and detailed audio, players will easily be able to find enemies or allies using sounds and sights. Gives a significant advantage in ambushing enemies or avoiding them altogether.

Conclusion: A challenging sniping shooter with a lot to offer

The Rebellion Developments game Sniper Elite 5 will offer a tense and challenging shooting experience on an open world map. Even with the issues player might experience during gameplay, Sniper Elite 5 is worth a try if you’re looking for a new shooter that will offer various modes and challenges with tense firefights.
