Evo 2019 has come to a close, with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate breaking all sorts of records. The event didn’t go off without a hitch, though. During the Tekken 7 finale, Bandai Namco showed off the Season 3 trailer, which will bring along new characters and moves. The organizers at Evo also decided to tease Solid Snake, from Metal Gear Solid fame. It turns out, it was all a joke, and nobody seems too happy about it, including Solid Snake himself.

The “trailer” shown on stage during Evo 2019 wasn’t much, but it got fans excited, to say the least, and “Solid Snake” quickly began trending on Twitter. But late last night, the official Evo Twitter account sent out a confirmation that it was all a joke they decided to play. Additionally, the organizers didn’t reach out to Bandai Namco about the trick.

Their statement reads:

Another issue, David Hayter, the voice of Snake, confirmed that he wasn’t consulted about the joke. He demanded that Evo not use his voice to promote games. He also confirmed that Konami, the publishers and IP owners to the Metal Gear franchise, weren’t consulted either.

EVO,

You also failed to consult me, or Konami. Please do not use my voice to promote other games. Ever.

The reaction to the joke has been, predictably, unfavorable. Fans weren’t too happy about getting the rug pulled out from underneath them, especially since the character reveal brought such a pop amongst fans. Solid Snake is already available to play in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, so his inclusion in Tekken 7 wouldn’t have been out of left field.
