Sonic Colors is regarded as one of Sonic’s best 3D games, amid a whole host of middling to straight-up bad games (we’re looking at you Sonic ’06 and Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric). However, Sonic fans can rejoice, as, in Sonic’s 30th-anniversary live stream broadcast earlier today, a remastered version of Sonic Colors, titled Sonic Colors Ultimate, is coming in September for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC via the Epic Games Store.
Up until now, Sonic Colors was only available on the Nintendo Wii. This was down to SEGA wanting to capitalize on the success of their Mario and Sonic Olympic Games series, although later on in 2013, an exclusivity contract that SEGA signed with Nintendo entitled them to at least three exclusive Sonic games for Nintendo platforms – the three being Sochi 2014’s Winter Olympic Games, Sonic Lost World (which eventually got a PC release) and the failed Sonic Boom series (which included the awful Rise of Lyric on Wii U).
Sonic Colours Ultimate will also be getting a two-part animation accompanying it, similar to how Sonic Mania and Team Sonic Racing received the same treatment. The animation will be called “Rise of the Wisps” and its first episode will premiere later this summer.
In what was perhaps the highlight of Sonic’s 30th-anniversary live stream, which also contained a tease of the next mainline Sonic game coming in 2022, we got a brief gameplay look at Sonic Colors Ultimate, which is merely just a graphics update (unless we hear any more about what’s in the Ultimate version, in which case we’ll update you right here on the Nerd Stash). The big bonus however is the availability. Going from a console that while was very popular, isn’t really at a prime spot in the entertainment center anymore, to the Switch, PS4, and Xbox (not to mention PC), will do a world of good for its reputation in the Sonic franchise.
