The vast open world of Sonic Frontiers is filled with side activities and quests, like the SOS Backup side mission. SOS Backup looks pretty straightforward at first glance, but some hidden details about how it works can make it exceptionally difficult to complete. This is even more true as players cannot boost or dodge while playing the mission, so players have to complete it the way the developers intended.  So, if you’re having a hard time saving all 16 Koco, here is everything you need to know to get through SOS Backup with ease.

How to complete SOS Backup in Sonic Frontiers

To start SOS Backup, you’ll need to find Knuckles on Ares Island and talk to him there. This launches the side mission and drops you right into the action. The mission’s objective is to run under pillars that rise and then smash into the ground with massive drills capable of killing Sonic to save small creatures called Koco. There are 16 Koco in total, and the pillars and Sonic both speed up depending on how many of them Sonic is carrying at any given time.

Since the mission stops players from using Sonic Frontiers‘ boost or dodge mechanics, it is best to focus on timing to grab the Kocos rather than speed. It is best done by holding lock-on to keep Sonic looking at the Koco you want to grab and then running in just after the pillar starts rising from the ground and there is enough room for Sonic to get underneath it unharmed. Once you have a handful of Kocos, you can take them over to Knuckles and deposit them to keep things from speeding up too much. Just how many you want to carry will depend on how comfortable you are with the speed of things, but doing it in two trips of eight Kocos each is a solid place to start.

How to Defeat Guardians in Sonic Frontiers

If you have difficulty getting the timing down for running under the pillars, you can also use a homing attack to quickly rush the Kocos and grab them, but doing so is unnecessary. During the side mission, you will have only three lives and a pretty strict time limit, so make sure to move as quickly as possible to get it done before running out. For completing SOS Backup, you’ll be rewarded with a Green Chaos Emerald.

Sonic Frontiers is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
