Sonic’s 30th-anniversary live stream may have been short, and the look at Sonic’s newest game even shorter than that, but we may have found out more details about that mysterious tease at the end of the live stream, more specifically the name. According to a press release by SEGA released to news publications, the name of Sonic’s upcoming game is Sonic Rangers.

The press release was quickly amended after the error was spotted, omitting the Sonic Rangers name drop, but unfortunately, now this news is out there. We don’t know really a whole lot about the game – all we have to go on is a 32-second teaser trailer.

In that trailer, we got to see Sonic running through a forest, with some strange, almost digital effects trailing him as he speeds by. That is accompanied by some Aztec or Mayan-looking textures behind the Sonic Team logo, to which we can guess that it may deal with some historical-looking architecture? It’s purely conjectured at this point, but we are looking forward to whatever Sonic Team brings to the table in 2022 with Sonic Rangers, if indeed that is the name.

While Sonic Forces’ name hinted at building an army to take back the world from Dr. Eggman, Sonic Rangers is a bit of a shot in the dark. Perhaps a more open world? A recent rumor perpetuated by a user apparently playing an early version of the game seems to hint at a more open structure, with collectible orbs opening up new levels.
