Sonic 2 is already set to expand the universe established in the first movie released in 2019. The sequel, coming in April, will have in Tails Colleen O’Shaughnessey return in the role of Tails, Sonic’s best friend and sidekick, and Idris Elba as Knuckles, another major character from the video game franchise. Sonic himself, voiced by Ben Schwartz, will also return, along with Jim Carrey as the evil Dr. Robotnik and James Marsden as Tom, Sonic’s adoptive father figure and guardian. The details on the third Sonic movie have not yet been clarified, though more information will likely come along with the release of the Knuckles spin-off series sometime in 2023. All that is known about this series is that Idris Elba will be returning to the role of Knuckles.

Even though the second film has not even come out yet, Paramount Pictures and Sega Corp have shown they are all too eager to expand the Sonic the Hedgehog movie universe with both Sonic 3 and other projects due for the future.

“We are delighted to announce that the third Sonic theatrical film and the first live-action Sonic series for Paramount+ are being actively developed. We’ve got a remarkable partnership with Paramount, and we are excited to continue expanding the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with them,” Sega CEO Haruki Satomi said. “2022 is shaping up to be a significant year for the franchise, with the second film being released this April, as well as Sonic Frontiers, the highly anticipated video game title, coming this holiday. Sonic has been beloved by fans across the world for over 30 years, and we look forward to continuing to bring memorable moments and experiences to them for many years to come”, an official statement from Paramount following the presentation reads.
