Sonic the Hedgehog is now one of the most successful video game movies of all time. That isn’t saying too much, given the horrendous track record of adapting games to the big screen. But in comparison, the response has been almost overwhelmingly positive both financially and critically.

Director Jeff Fowler has been making the rounds at various outlets to talk about the movie. He also revealed what the team considered bringing over from the games. He recently stated why the fan-favorite character Knuckles wasn’t included. But something that very nearly was is Super Sonic, the character’s ultra-powerful form that was first seen in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. While speaking to ComicBook.com, Fowler revealed this form was in early drafts of the script.

Sonic reaches his super form by harnessing the energy from the seven chaos emeralds. These emeralds play a big part in many of Sonic’s adventures. They make him faster, stronger, and grant him the ability of flight. Super Sonic is also the character’s Final Smash in the Super Smash Bros. series.

But again, just going back to what I said about the simplicity of it and only for the sake of just really starting from the simplest version and not trying to do too much, it just felt like, ‘Let’s just… let’s do the origins as Sonic and Robotnik and try to nail those characters before we potentially would open it up to some of these elements from the games that fans know and love.”

It was probably a good call to keep things simple for Sonic’s first outing. The movie definitely leaves room open for a sequel. And with how successful it’s been, we can expect Super Sonic to show up somewhere down the line.
