Better prepare to say goodbyes to your PS3 and PSP (and PS Vita, if you somehow fell for it like me). As reported by TheGamer, an anonymous source, claimed that the digital stores for PS3, PSP, and PS Vita are due to be shut down starting July this year. Allegedly, an official announcement of the storefronts retirement is planned for the end of this month.
According to the report, PSP’s and PS3’s stores will be closed on July 2. The PS Vita digital store shut down follows later; it will stay open until August 27. After those times are up, you will no longer be able to purchase digital copies of games or DLC for all three Sony consoles. If this report is true, then these last few months will be your last chance to download and buy any games you haven’t gotten already. I hope that we can at least still redownload any past purchases, though. If not, then this a pretty terrible move from Sony.
Both PSP and PS3 enjoyed successes in their lifetime. Sony moved 87.4 million PS3 units in 11 years, while the console officially ended production four years ago in 2017. The PSP also managed to hit 8o million unit sales since its debut in March 2005. However, the same can’t be said of PS Vita. Released in December 2011, it only managed to gain 10-15 million sales across its lifetime. PS Vita then is officially declared dead with the handheld production and any physical releases being shut down in 2019.
