Sony has revealed a new PlayStation Stars loyalty program with “digital collectibles” as prizes. PlayStation Stars will be a free service and will offer PlayStation users some tasks to collect loyalty points and rewards. One reward players may be received from points is a PSN wallet fund that can be used to purchase games.

PlayStation Stars Loyalty Program Gives Points and Collectibles

According to the Sony blog, players can receive prizes by participating in “a range of campaigns and events,” such as tournaments and trophy-based challenges. And being “the first player to platinum a blockbuster title in your local time zone” is an example of such a challenge.

PlayStation Plus isn’t necessary to join for PlayStation Stars. However, PS Plus subscribers can automatically earn points with their purchases on PSN, which can then be spent on wallet funds or games on PlayStation Store. It’s unclear how many points would be required to buy a new PS5 game or even if such games would be immediately redeemable for points. Players will also receive digital collectibles, including 3D rendered images of PlayStation characters and previous PlayStation platforms.

Sony Interactive Entertainment VP Grace Chen said that the prizes will be “digital representations of things that PlayStation fans enjoy, including figurines of beloved and iconic characters from games and other forms of entertainment, as well as cherished devices that tap into Sony’s history of innovation.” Chen confirmed that digital collectibles would never become NFTs.

New digital collectibles, defined as ultra-rare, were described by Sony as prizes. Therefore, it seems that direct purchase will not be possible. Players will earn loyalty points through challenges such as a monthly contest where participants must play any game to earn rewards.

Sony’s loyalty program is similar to Nintendo Gold Points or Microsoft Rewards. Sony also noted that PlayStation Stars would launch in phases across different regions later this year. Which areas will be covered when the program officially begins later this year are presently unknown.
