With the recent news of Shawn Layden’s departure and the rapid sellouts of The Last of Us 2’s special editions, PlayStation fans need some good news. And they didn’t let us down. Officially announced as of today, the next generation of the PlayStation console, now officially titled the PlayStation 5, is set to release Holiday of 2020.

Aside from announcing the system is officially named PlayStation 5 and its approaching release date, Sony also detailed some exciting insight into their two new developments for controllers. According to the PlayStation Blog, these two changes are haptic feedback and “adaptive triggers”.

Haptic feedback has been developed to enhance the players experience:

Similarly, the adaptive triggers are also all about enhancing the experience of PlayStation 5 users. “Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain. In combination with the haptics, this can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions,” Sony explained in their blog post.

As the release date for the console approaches, there are sure to be further technological developments and exclusives releases on the horizon, but now all we can do is wait!
