In an interview released in late May, Sony’s new CEO John Kodera revealed that the Japanese platform holder is still interested into making another portable console despite the commercial debacle of PS Vita.

Like he shared in an conversation with Bloomberg, Kodera said the company is open to exploring this option as he doesn’t necessarily believe that portable gaming needs to reach other devices such as smartphones or tablets to be successful.

“In my opinion, rather than separating portable gaming from consoles, it’s necessary to continue thinking of it (portable gaming) as one method to deliver more gaming experiences and exploring what our customers want from portable. We want to think about many options,” Kodera said.

So, it’s very interesting that Sony still thinks of other ways than the nowadays usual mobile app approach like Nintendo’s to penetrate portable gaming. I’ve very fond memories of PSP and PS Vita, and it would be nice to see that lineage go on with the due differences.

Of course, with PlayStation 4 leading the generation and being a huge commercial success for Sony, it really doesn’t seem like the platform holder has to be in a rush to change their schedule anytime soon.
