There could be problems finding a PS4 this fall, according to a new report that suggests there could be kinks in the new console’s supply chain. While Sony is expected to ship between 12 – 16 million units in 2013, Digitimes is reporting that sources within the PS4 upstream supply chain are claiming that they’ve yet to receive any further instructions from the electronics maker.
A Digitimes source told the publication. “Sony originally told its upstream suppliers that it will start shipping its new PS4 game consoles in June with mass shipments scheduled in August, and shipment volumes would have a chance to reach 20 million units in 2013.”
The lack of information from Sony is implying that there may be a delay in Sony’s shipping schedule for the new console. Then again, it might be a bit too early to tell. Nevertheless, this fall is shaping up to be a very crowded launch window for the PlayStation 4. It’s anticipated that both Sony and Microsoft will launch new consoles this holiday season, and if these rumors hold true, it could be difficult to find the PS4 on store shelves. This wouldn’t be entirely new territory for the PlayStation brand. The PlayStation 3 had a notoriously rocky launch, with interested parties unable to locate a console for months following the system’s availability.
This also isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumblings of a possible shortage for the new hardware. With many fans chomping at the bit for a next-gen experience, GameStop has come out on numerous occasions to indicate that there has been such strong demand for information about the new console, that the CEO expects possible shortages of the PS4.
