Does Sony owe you anything for the recent PSN outage? The plain and simple explanation is no.  Sony hired a team of attorneys to craft the user agreement that you consent to when signing up for the service.

WARRANTY DISCLAIMER AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITY No warranty is given about the quality, functionality, availability or performance of Sony Online Services, or any content or service offered on or through Sony Online Services. All services and content are provided “AS IS” and “AS AVAILABLE” with all faults. SCEA does not warrant that the service and content will be uninterrupted, error-free or without delays.

Furthermore, the service is free and provided as a perk to the already long list of features for the console.  Now that we got out of the way, what Sony does and doesn’t owe you, we can hypothesize what they will do to make up for the outage to show you that they indeed give a crap.  I think it’s an utmost certainty that PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive some form of compensation for the outage.  As for the rest of the network, there’s no telling if there is anything in the cards to make up for lost gaming time on the network.

Meanwhile, Patrick Seybold of SCEA has issued a statement regarding the outage.

We sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online. Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.

We thank you for your patience to date and ask for a little more while we move towards completion of this project. We will continue to give you updates as they become available.

Thanks Reader, Silenthawx
