A new job ad by Sony seems to aim to bring PS3 and PS Vita emulation to the next-gen console. Revealing that the company wants to hire a “classical engineer,” PlayStation Studios may want to work on consoles that it has been ignoring until now. Also, rumors claim that old PS3 peripherals may work on the new console, the PS5.
Sony Might Be Working on PS3 and PS Vita Emulation
If you’ve tried Sony’s new PlayStation Plus for the PS4 and PS5, you’ve probably noticed that when you explore the 400+ games in its archives, most of the PS3 games require streaming. But the streaming service is terrible – it crashes most of the time. The PlayStation and old games fans now have new hope for a PS Vita and PS3 emulator thanks to a recent job ad by PlayStation Studios. According to Kotaku, Sony recruited exclusively a “classics engineer,” who will work as a software developer to create new emulators.
The renewed subscription on PS Plus makes it possible to play games from PS+, PS1, PSP, PS2, PS4, and of course, PS5. But players have to use a streaming service for PS3. The classic engineer job ad on LinkedIn by PlayStation Studios asks:
“Our Software Development Engineer position works on the Tools and Technology team at PlayStation Studios to support the newly relaunched “Classics” for PS4 and PS5. Classic games run via emulation of legacy PlayStation platforms. As a Classics engineer, you would work closely with a group of other engineers, producers, and QA teams to fix bugs, add new features, and develop new emulators.”
Several rumors exist that Sony has recently considered adding PS3 emulation to the PS5. Although PS3 emulation on the PS5 is undoubtedly applicable, many in the game industry said that Sony is unlikely to devote the necessary time and money to the project. Also, earlier, some insiders have recommended that Sony hire the RPCS3 group, the developers behind the unofficial PS3 emulator.
