Tucked in between today’s many PlayStation 5-related announcements, Sony has confirmed that the PS5 will be getting a brand new VR headset. However, the company also added that PS5 VR won’t be launching this year. Hideaki Nishino, PS5 Platform Planning & Management First Senior Vice President, details the next-generation VR system over on the PlayStation Blog.

Learning a lot since launching PS VR on PS4, Nishino wrote that the next-gen PS5 VR system will have “dramatic leaps” in performance and interactivity. The new PlayStation VR is planned to enhance every feature from the previous generation, including:

  • Simplified setup and improved ease-of-use by making it a single cord VR headset
  • High-fidelity visual experience
  • Enhanced resolution and field of view
  • New PlayStation VR controller, incorporating DualSense’s key features with a focus on great ergonomics

But as previously mentioned, PS5 VR will not be launching in 2021 considering there is still a lot of development underway for it. Nevertheless, if you do want to enjoy VR content and games on your PS5, the next-gen console actually supports the current PS VR headset through the use of a special adapter that you can easily request for free from PlayStation’s official site.

Sony first launched the PlayStation VR headset for PS4 back on October 13, 2016. It is equipped with a 5.7-inch OLED panel, with a display resolution of 1080p, 100-degree field of vision, stereoscopic 3D, and can send output to both the headset and TV at the same time. Non-virtual reality games can also be played within using the headset via Cinematic Mode, which renders it to a simulated widescreen projection in a virtual 3D space. Other contents, such as 360-degree photos and video viewing, 3D Blu-Ray movies, and Share Play and Live from PlayStation are also supported.
