Sony says that starting October 7, the PlayStation 4 will no longer have Facebook integration through the console. The service allowed players to access Facebook features through their PlayStation and post gameplay videos.

A major push of PlayStation 4 at launch was the ability to connect your gaming to social media through the use of the Share button on the controller. While the integration was decent at best, it did make it easy to share gameplay videos of game glitches and other fun moments.

Sharing Gameplay to the world with Facebook integration

Before players could hit the Share button on their PlayStation 4 controller to post to multiple services, including Facebook. Now you can only post content to Twitter and YouTube, or stream through Twitch.

Some features helped to bring attention to streams through sharing gameplay broadcasts or were more pestering like sharing earned trophies.

Other features that will no longer work are adding PlayStation friends from Facebook or syncing your profile picture to show on your PlayStation 4 profile. For the profile picture, you can upload a picture to use for your profile via the PlayStation App.

What Happens Next?

While PlayStation has not said why the need for removal of Facebook integration, but Facebook did clarify why this is happening. In a statement to Kotaku, Facebook said they and Sony are still working on a contract to improve integration on PlayStation. In the meantime, until contracts come to a close the Facebook features will not be available.

Sony has said some details about the upcoming PlayStation 5, however, no details have been announced on if the new console will have the same social media features.

Even if most of the features did not come to be as necessary as proposed, having a way to easily share screenshots and videos turned out to be one of the better features. Especially as a way to distinguish the new consoles, the social connection made sharing gameplay moments easy and accessible.
