As we’ve reported, Sony is interested in acquiring new studios to have more exclusives in the PlayStation portfolio. But that’s just one part of the overall strategy at the company. As revealed by The Wall Street Journal’s Takashi Mochizuki, there’s a chance we could see more partnership with external publishers in the future.

On Twitter over the weekend, Mochizuki shared that Sony’s, “spending a lot of resources to strengthen ties with AAA game publishers as it believes next-generation PlayStation is ‘a niche product for core users.’”

These hints could mean that the PS5 launch lineup could be featuring not only multiple exclusives but also second party relationships with big publishers similarly to what happened with Rise of the Tomb Raider and Xbox back in the days.

It could be a hint to timed or total exclusives, like that with Square Enix on Final Fantasy VII Remake or Marvel’s Avengers‘ post-launch content.

“That means less attention to smaller publishers, and analysts worry PlayStation software catalog could lose a wide variety,” Mochizuki said. “But Sony official, speaking anonymously, says no worries because they would release games to PlayStation anyway as the platform is too large to ignore.”

PS5 is expected to release in holiday 2020.

My latest: Sony’s spending a lot of resources to strengthen ties with AAA game publishers as it believes next-generation PlayStation is “a niche product for core users.” Even Sony CEO says software firms need to have certain capital to take advantage of the powerful console.
