Sony has recently filed a patent for a new PlayStation Controller that could compete with the features on the Xbox Elite controller. While not finalized, this does reveal an interesting and promising look for versatility in the controller. This will be part of the PlayStation 5’s release, and it seems Sony is looking to give gamers more options in their play.
The controller itself is similar in design to the DualShock 4 one. However, there is an extra set of buttons on the bottom of the controller. Sony has stated that those buttons come as a $30 attachment. They will be programmable, similar to the Xbox Elite controller that sells for $180 and comes with customizable paddle buttons. For that price, Xbox players also get a more helpful rubberized grip and adjustable tension for the analog sticks. Sony may be attempting to emulate the system Xbox has set up.
Aside from the programmable buttons, this new PlayStation controller will have a USB Micro-B charger that will perhaps allow it to work with the PlayStation 4, as well. Sony has previously stated the PlayStation 5 controller uses a USB-C charging port, but probably for an additional cost, gamers can have this cross-compatibility. There are also promised more dynamic “rumble” effects that will feel distinct based on what is happening in the game.
Microsoft has already stated that Xbox One-compatible controllers will still work with the Xbox Series X. PlayStation has a history of being more stingy with their products, but if they move forward with this new design that is promising for gamers who don’t want to buy a completely new set of equipment. Both of these new consoles are set to release late in 2020, but no exact date has been confirmed. It is possible they could get pushed back into early 2021, depending upon finalizing designs, functions, and prices.
