A newly published patent related to Sony suggests the company is working on a PlayStation mobile controller. The patent, released this week by the SIE‘s Japanese division, describes a device coupled with two controller grips. This controller resembled DualShock 4 rather than PS5’s DualSense. The controller is described as “a left-side grip portion and a right-side grip portion gripped by the left and right hands of the user.”

The PlayStation mobile controller is “a shaft portion that can be tilted by the user, and detect the tilting direction and tilting amount of the shaft portion,” according to the patent released by Sony.

If this device gets into mass production level, it will probably be served as a conjunction with a smartphone to play PlayStation games via Remote Play or the cloud. It is worth mentioning that PlayStation controllers are already compatible with smartphones via Bluetooth.

Back in October, Apple Arcade content boss, Nicola Sebastiani, joined the SIE mobile development team. It was mentioned the team is building a new business unit to adapt the most popular games for mobiles. The following month, Jim Ryan, PlayStation CEO, also confirmed the company is working on bringing some of the “iconic IPs” to mobile. He didn’t elaborate on which games they would be or how they could make big games like God of War work on smartphones.

“We have been thinking about how players enjoy our content and have had some early success with experimenting with mobile games and apps to provide more choice to gamers,” Ryan said.

“PlayStation has a huge catalog of diverse first-party IP that can transition to smartphone gaming and complement our AAA games or live service games. We are exploring the mobile market with some wonderful PlayStation franchises so please stay tuned.” Ryan continued.

It was recently confirmed that Wipeout, the PlayStation racing franchise, is returning for smartphones. Sony could remake the old games and release them for smartphones.
