Sony says that PS4 pre-orders are doing very well. In fact, the company said that they’ve gotten over one million pre-orders for the console, just ahead of their announcement of the release date for the PlayStation 4.

Sony’s Fergal Gara says that pre-orders are higher than the company has seen in 20 years, and believes that retailers are going to have their hands full come this holiday season.

“The problem with pre-orders, which is a good problem to have, is that they’re very, very high. Higher than we’ve ever seen in 20 years in this business,” explained the executive. “As an ex-retailer myself, I understand this at least as well as anyone else: we need to help retailers manage the expectations of their customers and not let them down.”

Gara says that retailers should not be promising any further pre-orders for the PS4 as guaranteed day one launch units. While it’s a good problem to have, this overwhelming demand, it could turn into a nightmare for consumers looking to purchase a console this holiday season.

Sony has been upfront from the very beginning in saying that they expect the console to be hard to find for those who don’t pre-order.
