In a keynote at DICE 2019, Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios Chairman Shawn Layden has shared some interesting thoughts about Nintendo.
Layden reminded everyone in the attendance that Nintendo Switch was the best selling console in 2018 in the United States.
And this serves as a reminder itself about how you should “never underestimate Nintendo,” a company whose efforts made “all of us better.”
“The best-selling console of 2018 in the U.S. was… The Nintendo Switch. Nintendo took a massive risk when they brought this to the market,” he said.
It’s great to hear such statements from Sony, a company which has often been accused of being rather snooty when it came to dealing with competitors.
“People thought Nintendo might one day be out of the hardware business. People would say things like ‘kids play games on mobile phones and tablets, dedicated portable gaming is dead and gone.’
But as I’ve said before: never underestimate Nintendo… All of us are better for their efforts.”
Indeed, there’s no doubt about the influence Nintendo has had in the past over the game developers, publishers and platform holder, and it still retains it to some extent even though Sony and Nintendo have apparently found their identity over the last few years.
