The PlayStation 3 may have seen its best releases in the rear view, but, that doesn’t mean the console has no life left in it. According to Sony, they plan to gradually phase out the console as customers transition to the PlayStation 4.
“It’s been seven years since the release of the PS3 and the console continues to sell at a constant pace, plus, we have many upcoming titles. We have no intention of immediately shifting from the PS3 to the PS4,” said Sony Japan President Hiroshi Kawano speaking to Famitsu.
Kawano believes that the switch from the PlayStation 3 to the PlayStation 4 will be “gradual”. The Sony executive does not see the transition as one that the company is forcing brand loyalists to switch right away, to do so would be “a maker’s ego talking, plain and simple.”
Will we see the kind of dedication to quality that we saw from Sony’s first party studios with new hardware on store shelves? Probably not, but if the PS2 is any indication, the PlayStation 3 will be around for some time to come.
